Of Mermaids and Moonlight - The brilliant film choices of
Cher's acting career
On
a whim, I brought home Moonstruck from the library last week.
What a great movie! The writing is fantastic, and both Cher and
Nicholas Cage are great in it.
I'm sure I saw this movie back in the old days, but could not
remember much of it except, of course, Cher's response to Nicholas
Cage's admittion of love; she slaps him and says "Snap out of it!"
(This is the morning after she met this man who is the brother of
her fiancée and slept with him, the brother) The outrageous,
dramatic characteristics of the Italian family living in New York
are fun to watch, and Nicholas Cage's character's reason for his
5-year grudge against his brother is hilarious. The movie. directed
by Norman Jewison, was made in 1987 but still holds up and is great.
I then decided that we had to watch Mermaids. This movie is
from 1990 and stars Cher and a young Winona Ryder, co-starring Bob
Hoskins and about a 6-year-old Christina Ricci. The writing for this
movie is also great, with so much character development that I was
wondering if it is based on a novel. The idiosyncrasies and peculiar
traits of the two women are so well rounded and complete, it's hard
to believe all that could come from a screenplay. The scene where
Christina Ricci come out with the Jack-o-Lantern on her head alone
is worth seeing the movie. (I can't wait until Natasha does
something wacky like that.)
For a full list of Cher's film and television appearances and
musical contributions, see her entry on the
IMBD.
